Treating Depression
Part 1 - Therapy

The main ways of treating depression are through medications (either natural [herbal or plant extracts], pharmaceutical [can be plant or synthetically created]), and through therapy, either formal (qualified professional) or informal (trusted family and friends). One cannot underestimate the stigma associated with depression. Firstly it is often very difficult for the sufferer to admit or acknowledge that there may be a problem that requires a diagnosis. Secondly it is not uncommon for those who have been diagnosed with depression (or any mental illness for that matter) to participate in the medication side of treatment and not engage in therapy or counseling. Counseling is over whelmingly important. Why?

Background: When we are born our brains are basically waiting to be programmed. The brain is like a very powerful computer and when we are newly born it is thirsty for knowledge and new learning, waiting to be filled with life experiences. Those experiences ultimately become 'stored language'. Think for a moment. Concentrate on your thoughts. It is now known that ultimately our thoughts are 'words' - our natural language. There is never a moment of the day when we are not thinking thoughts. When we sleep our brains are active. During the day or whenever we are awake our brains are active. We are never not thinking. In fact the philosopher, Descartes in the 16th century decreed the only way he knew he was alive was that he was always thinking. It was the only thing he could trust. He could not trust his eye sight for it sometimes played tricks on him (optical illusions). His hearing could also play tricks on him (sometimes we can hear things that turn out to be quite different to what we thought we heard). The only thing he absolutely knew to be true was that he was thinking. So ultimately every experience we have in life will have a component that is thought and thoughts are words. If you follow this logic, depression is an experience, therefore it must have a strong thought component or word component. To help sort these thoughts out we need to communicate these thoughts through words (or art or drama - some method that makes sense of the thoughts).

Have you ever noticed that if you do not share your thoughts they just stay in your head, circulating without an outlet? Sharing them, releasing them, helping to make sense of them with others is crucial for a healthy mind set. This can be done formally or with friends and family. However if you find that you are stuck and it is not helping you move on, you may require professional help. It is important to realise that choosing a therapist or counsellor that you resonate with or relate well to, is important.

Mark Lockyer, the author of this web site, has compiled an eBook that focuses on what he believes to be the two main factors that keep people 'stuck' in depression. You can find out more about this Ebook and the current offer that includes two free hour long meditation CD's by clicking the link here.
