This brings into play the concept of 'comfortableness' where we can be comfortable in our mental health experience. When I think of 'comfortable' I think of 'predictable' where the experience is exactly that - predictable. The experience will no doubt be the same (something will trigger the depression and we will react in the usual way - withdrawn, isolate yourself, lack energy etc). This will eventually pass and in the simplest terms we will go back to 'normal' without really exploring why we went there in the first place.
There are two areas of psychology that I particularly like to discuss when I'm on this topic of 'comfortableness' and predictability'. One is how it fits into the 'cycle of addictive behaviors' and the other is 'cognitive dissonance'. Both these topics help explain how we justify our actions, behaviors, thoughts and feelings, even though we may well not be happy with them. Please feel free to click on the links to these two areas to get a good understanding of what they are about. I know they have helped me get to the point where I can be a lot more objective about my condition at the time rather than be, as I have often done in the past, be a victim and slave to depression.
As we move on and take more control of our life we can start to create the life we really want to live. This can seem only a dream at the beginning of the journey but it is possible. So far I have talked about the first area of investigation which is trying to understand what may be afflicting us (the cause, diagnosis and treatment of the mental health issue). Then I spoke about how to really get a grasp on the reality of this affliction which could well be included under the treatment of it, but I feel it goes further as this is often an ongoing journey and investigation. The third area is realizing that we can start to create a different reality and one that is in fact what ever we want it to be - good health, great wealth and amazing happiness.
My invitation to you is to stay along for the ride and enjoy the journey which is going to be difficult at times. Getting out of that 'comfort' zone is often not easy.
Please feel free to email me on the link below if there is an area that I have not included on this web site that you would like to see included. Perhaps it may be more information on a topic or the inclusion of a topic that isn't listed. I would appreciate the feedback as it will help this site grow.
Thankyou again for visiting. Good luck with your journey and feel free to give me feedback!
